授業の目的、または到達目標

This is a course for learning practical sides of actual interpreting scenes. Students will find out what is the ‘good interpreting service’. They will realize the level of language proficiency, knowledge and communication skills required of an interpreter. Through training process used for professional interpreter training, they will be able to acquire basic interpreting skills.

授業の概要

While finding out the gap between the required level and their own level, various styles of training methods will be used to fill the gap; shadowing, retention, logical analysis, paraphrasing, speed reading and sight translation. For a certain subject matter for interpreting job (for example, a marketing meeting of a manufacturer), students will learn how to research, prepare and practice for the job. Concurrently, students will try to improve their language proficiencies in Japanese and English. The course will include a field trip to a conference where professional interpreters are working.

準備学習

Students are advised to read one chapter of the textbook each week and come ready for discussion in class. For learning practical interpreting skills, they are advised to spend more time on review and practice at home than preparation
